About Diageo

Diageo is the world's leading premium drinks company, a business built on the principles and foundations laid by the giants of our industry.

By creating a truly inclusive workplace that recognises difference and diversity of thought, feelings and actions, we can allow our people to unleash the power of being themselves, always, to enable them to Celebrate Life, Every Day, Everywhere.

Context

Innovation is critical to our success and our dedicated R&D team focus on creating new drinks and new technologies that inspire our customers and consumers across all countries where you can find our products.

The Innovation Research and Development team are a global team operating out of 3 regional R&D centres. Within this global team is the Commercial Science team, based in Bishop's Stortford, England. We are currently looking for a passionate and creative recent graduate scientist to join them in an 18-month placement as a Research Technologist. As a team, Commercial Science aims to create and adapt new-to-Diageo technologies that deliver highly differentiated, industry leading capabilities to deliver profit and competitive advantage to the company.  During your placement, you will work with our internal team of Ph.D. scientists and our outstanding network of eminent technical experts to leverage your scientific training and experience in contributing meaningful, commercially valuable research in support of Diageo's long-term technical goals.

The Role

As a Research Technologist, you will be involved in a variety of daily duties to ensure the lab and the projects are running to a consistently high and efficient standard.  You will share the workload with other scientists to ensure the labs are fully stocked, everything is in order and all equipment is calibrated, not only to support your team, but ensure that your own projects run smoothly.
Once you are fully familiar with the Diageo ways of working, you will be supporting the Research Scientists in the team, working closely with them on their complex programmes and taking ownership of smaller projects within these.

The Person

We are, first and foremost, looking for somebody who is passionate about research and their work, powerfully focused on delivering commercial value to Diageo through this research.  We want someone who is dissatisfied with the status quo, comfortable with uncertainty and has a curiosity to learn and bring ideas to the table. On top of this, there are some essential skills required for this role:
- A degree in a relevant scientific subject; chemistry, food science, engineering, biology etc.
- A current student looking for a placement year or recent graduate
- A real interest and passion around science as it applies to food
- Have a collaborative approach to working and never be afraid to express your ideas
- A creative mind and an interest in delivering practical, commercial value through scientific research.

Please note, we do have a preferred candidate for this role. However, we do welcome all applications

A diverse workforce is essential to our success as a multi-national, multi-cultural business.  Our aim is to foster a culture that provides opportunities for all, through the variety of different personalities, experiences and perspectives, creating a stimulating and rewarding working environment.
By creating a truly inclusive workplace that recognises difference and diversity of thought, feelings and actions, we can allow our people to unleash the power of being themselves, always, to enable them to Celebrate Life, Every Day, Everywhere.
