The Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) is an international, not-for-profit organisation which is the world’s largest provider of qualifications in wine, spirits and sake. Our headquarters are in the dynamic SE1 area of London (where this role will be based), but with subsidiary companies in USA and Asia. Our qualifications are available through a network of over 700 Approved Programme Providers (APPs) working in over 70 countries and 19 languages.
We are now seeking a Business Development Manager for Spirits to assist in the implementation of WSET’s EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) business development strategy for markets across the region, helping WSET to achieve its overall corporate business objectives, with a particular emphasis on spirits.
You will work to maintain and grow WSET business and activity throughout the EMEA region but with a focus on agreed target territories. You will be expected to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the global spirits industry (especially within EMEA), have experience of the bar sector and wider spirits industry in multiple EMEA markets and be well-networked within these.
Good organisational skills with experience in managing a varied and demanding workload is needed, along with the ability to prioritise and deliver results within a required time-frame. Personal integrity and authority is crucial to maintain WSET’s reputation and standards when working with customers. You will also possess great communication skills to support working with international APPs/candidates, with the ability to adapt language and tone to suit a variety of different stakeholders. You will have the ability to work well in a team, as well as being self-motivated to work independently. Good working knowledge of Microsoft Package is important.
The ideal candidate will have experience in educational and/or presentation skills. A good level of numeracy and literacy is essential, with meticulous attention to detail and excellent accuracy. You should have plenty of initiative and creativity and you will be required to be reliable and flexible as international travel is a requirement. The job-holder must have a passport which meets international visa application standards.
This is a new role and there is significant scope for the successful candidate to define the role and guide the development of our spirits strategy.
•Business Development Strategy: Support the development and implementation of WSET’s business strategy for the areas of responsibility as agreed with the Business Development Director EMEA
•Business Development: Leverage your network of contacts to widen the provision of WSET’s spirits qualifications. Increase awareness of, and drive demand for, these qualifications within the sector. Support existing Approved Programme Providers (APPs) with operational and administration assistance as required. Respond to incoming enquiries from potential (APPs) and provide developmental support.
•Education: Teach our spirits qualifications as required. Present tasting/masterclasses as required. Develop existing spirits educators at our existing APPs and train new educators.
•Quality Assurance: Contribute to the maintenance of WSET’s reputation for quality education by: Conducting approval and review visits to APPs. Attending WSET qualification courses delivered by APPs, to monitor quality of teaching and assess WSET course programmes in line with WSET approval criteria, as directed by the Business Development Director EMEA
•Other Activities: Assist in the preparation of reports for the Business Development Director EMEA as appropriate. From time to time, at the request of the Business Development Director EMEA, represent the EMEA Team and participate in inter-departmental working parties reflecting your areas of responsibility and skill-set
Desirable Skills and Experience
• WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits
• Fluency in a second European language
